DEATH

We hope for eternal life, sure. But it's always sad to lose someone.

Well-meaning Christians say to me after a loss - It's okay, you'll get to see him again. And it annoys me.

We're not good dealing with death, and Christians aren't much better than anyone else. When someone passes away, people always want to talk about celebrating life, and not actually acknowledging the truth, which is sad. Like, death is sad. Death takes people away from loved ones. You won't see them again. You don't get to spend time with them again on this life. That is a sad reality. Whatever happens in the future, whatever in the light of eternity is to come, the truth is there is a sadness and a loss for the present.

And I think, we need to be better at acknowledging loss and pain and sitting with it, rather than just trying to distance ourselves from all pain in this world because you know, we don't like it and it's uncomfortable. I mean, Jesus wept at the tomb of Lazarus, his friend, even though He knew he's going to defeat death, he's still sad at that point. And that, I think, gives us a freedom to accept that God is with us in our pain and it's okay to be sad.

Death is a horrible thing, but one day, it will be dealt with.
